Our mission

Our mission at Mountain Man is to help you make your dreams come true in the safest but most fun way possible. With your motivation and our passion and experience, we can make anything happen!

We plan to start small and grow organically,  we want to offer entry level adventures and build people up so they can take on bigger and bigger challenges. As we grow, so will our reach and also our adventures.

What is most important to us is that we remember our humble origins and keep offering the entry level trips to get people started on their adventures!

Why we started Mountain Man

"I started mountaineering by teaching myself and I dragging some mates along. I famously said “we can do this, how hard can it be?”. Oh boy! Was I lucky to get away with it!!!!! Although I’ve had some brilliant times, I’ve also some close calls and subsequently, every time I’ve hired a guide, my knowledge and understanding has increased massively and in a much safer environment. I still love getting out there with just my mates but learning from qualified and experienced guides has probably saved at least 1 or 2 of my 9 lives. This is the very reason I started Mountain Man; so you can safely and quickly grow your skills, knowledge and confidence in the mountains." – Doug Spence, Founder

The future of Mountain Man

As we grow, we plan to offer bigger and bigger adventures but we'll always want to offer entry level trips to those that are at the start of their journey. Our plan is to expand by including winter trips in the UK and then look at expanding into Europe, Africa and Asia (and who knows, one day we might be standing on top of Mount Everest with you). We also want to add technical climbing as well as skiing trips so stay tuned!

"We don't want to be some huge faceless corporate, we just want to help as many people get into the mountains as we can." - Doug Spence, Founder

The team

Doug Spence, Founder - Skier, climber and mountaineer. Doug has climbed in both the summer and the winter in the UK and has undertaken climbs on both Canada and the Alps. For Doug, just being in the mountains is amazing but for him, there is nothing better than taking in views that are earned through the hard work of getting up there under his own steam – he's known for skinning up (walking up in alpine touring skis) and skiing down just to avoid using the lifts. Doug coaches obstacle technique at Dirty Dozen Races and loves to help people build their confidence.

Mike Pescod, Head Guide - Skier, climber and mountaineer and pretty handy on mountain bike too! Mike loves the mountains and he started as young as 4! Although he doesn’t remember that first trip up Pen Y Fan, he does remember his first week long trip aged 8 when he really started to fall in love with the great outdoors. Mike has climbed and skied all over the world cutting his teeth in Russia and Africa. Mike is not only a brilliant guide but he’s also a hell of a good bloke. He and I have spent many great days together including a week’s hut trip in the Alps where he brilliantly navigated for several hours in complete white out conditions. I like to think he was equally impressed with my skiing even though he had to shout out on occasion that I needed to turn (I like to ski straight down stuff, I don’t think he was expected that)! Mike is on the Jöttnar Pro Team and the founder of Abacus Mountaineering

Here's what people have to say about our lead guide, Mike...

"I've been up to Mike and team for close on 10 years to climb each February. No matter what the weather throws at us Mike has always managed to provide top days out. Can't recommend him enough." - Aidan Roe
"Many thanks to Mike for the fantastic intro to outdoor rock climbing last week. Excellent tuition, encouragement and company - in just a few days we covered so much, Tower Ridge in snow, Agag's Groove in the sun... Can't wait for the next opportunity to hone my skills as a newly "competent second", not to forget practising leading. An addiction begins..." - Katya Thomson
"Abacus Mountain Guides made a challenge an incredibly enjoyable experience - from the preparation (clarifying what was needed in terms of equipment and training) through to pacing and encouraging us on the day, when your guide knows the route like the back of their hand there isn't a single question they can't answer and it made a material difference. That the guides are absolutely delightful to spend a day with is the icing on the cake!" - Jean Kerr
"I have climbed with Mike and Abacus for a number of years and I can honestly say he is the best guide that I have ever climbed with. Mike's enthusiasm and knowledge are second to none but perhaps as important is his ability to instil confidence and to remain patient when tackling routes at a grade new to his clients. His passion for the mountains is infectious and he is always happy to impart his knowledge. I cannot recommend Abacus highly enough." - Anthony Tropeano
